Timeline
Renewable energy zones are long-term investments that require extensive planning and coordination. Hawaiian Electric dedicates significant resources to environmental review, permitting and building the transmission needed to safely carry renewable energy to homes and businesses across the island. Taking the time to do this work upfront helps ensure projects are built efficiently and deliver lasting benefits to our communities.

2021-2025: Early Outreach, Research and Identification
Hawaiian Electric gathered broad public input on local opportunities and challenges for potential energy projects to help identify potential renewable energy zones. Hawaiian Electric also gathered technical data (generation potential, land availability and climate risk exposure) to inform early mapping of renewable energy zones.
2026: Evaluation and Prioritization
Hawaiian Electric evaluated Oahu renewable energy zones against criteria and using community input and technical data. Hawaiian Electric filed a report outlining the results of the evaluation with the Public Utilities Commission on June 30, 2026.
2027-2029: Planning and Development
Engineering and siting studies, environmental surveys, right-of-way planning and community engagement. Planning continues for additional renewable energy zones.
2029-2035: Design and Construction
Final design, permitting, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning. Development advances for future renewable energy zones.
2035-2045: Ongoing Buildout
Continued design, construction and integration of renewable energy zones statewide.
2045: Net-Zero Grid
Hawaii achieves its net-zero carbon emissions goal.
