Integrated Grid Plan

The Integrated Grid Plan outlines a pathway to a clean energy future. It proposes actionable steps to decarbonize the electric grid on the State of Hawai'i's timeline, with a flexible framework that can adapt to future technologies.

Hawaiian Electric is in its second cycle of integrated grid planning.

A Cyclical Process

The IGP process is a multi-year, multi-cycle process. It is designed to be iterative and collaborative, with annual updates and ongoing stakeholder and community engagement to develop and refine the plan. This means that planning and implementation is not a one-time event, but an ongoing, cyclical process.

  • First cycle: The first IGP cycle began in 2018 and concluded with the acceptance of the Integrated Grid Plan by the Public Utilities Commission in March 2024.
  • Now: Hawaiian Electric is now in the second cycle of integrated grid planning. In August 2025, Hawaiian Electric filed a draft workplan for this second cycle with the Public Utilities Commission.

This cycle will occur over three years followed by review by the Public Utilities Commission. Hawaiian Electric’s vision for this cycle is to carry forward and build on the collaborative spirit of the first cycle, which represented more than five years of partnership with stakeholders and community members across the islands.

Together, we can work toward the state’s goal of an energy system that emits zero net carbon emissions and use 100% renewable resources.
